Preparing for Jobs
There are two steps involves in preparing for a job. The first is to actually obtain employment and the second is preparing for your first day of work. Both are equally important to ensuring a successful work experience.
Looking for a job actually requires a lot of preparation all by itself. First you must decide what type of jobs you are qualified to do that will help you on your career path in your desired field. Next you will create a resume emphasizing your skills and experience and be ready to fill out applications with more detailed information. While you are conducting the actual job search of hunting down openings and applying for posts, you will want to be developing and practicing your answers for any job interviews you may get. This process can be honed with each new interview, unless you’re lucky enough to be hired from your first one.
Perseverance is key in looking for a job in this economy. It may take you much longer than you thought to find employment, but keep plugging away and use each new application as a way to further hone both your resume and your interview performance.
The process of preparing for the job itself begins as soon as you receive a job offer. You will want to carefully consider whether the job meets your career and financial goals — and which is more important for your immediate needs. Taking a job for the wrong reasons is almost a guarantee of an unhappy fit for both you and your employer. During the process of discussing the offer, ask questions about benefits, pay schedule, work hours, and dress code so that you will be adequately prepared for getting down to work.
Once you’ve accepted the job, be sure to confirm your start date and time and where you need to be. Some companies provide group orientation prior to starting work while others favor on the job training. Be sure to purchase appropriate clothing for the job and that it is cleaned and ready for your first days of work. Get plenty of sleep the night before and be sure to arrive promptly. You’ll want to bring any documentation necessary to fill out paperwork as well as a notebook and a few pens to get you through your first day.
If you prepare for your first job with care, attention to detail, and an attitude of eagerness, then you’re more likely to carry that with you to the first day, which is the best way to start.
